Choosing the best Jeep for off roading isn't as easy as you might think. The name Jeep has been synonymous with rugged and durable vehicles since it rolled off the assembly line on September 21, 1940. Within the Jeep family there is wide selection of sport vehicles to choose from.
There are many forms of activities for your Jeep that does not involve a paved road. Driving through the mud, water, sand, gravel or snow has become a favorite pass time for many which includes rock crawling. This sport requires modification of your vehicle for higher clearances. Mud-bogging challenges drivers to plow through muddy areas as far as possible without getting stuck down in it. Dune bashing requires that you beat up the sand with your vehicle. These are just a few of the activities one can do with a Jeep.
The CJ-7, Civilian Jeep, best known for its all-wheel drive automatic transmission option allowed beginner off-road daredevils to easily navigate rough ground. Although the Laredo and Renegade models had chrome packages they were perfect for off-road as well as going out on the town. The CJ-7 is well known and loved for mud racing.
Another excellent Jeep for down and dirty fun is the JK, YJ and TJ otherwise known as the Wrangler. This 4X4 SUV brought back the ever-loved Jeep style used during WW2. Released in the late 80's the Wrangler has been re-fashioned several times up until 2007. Like the CJ models, the Wrangler uses a live axle system which allows all four wheels to move together for better traction and power.
The next Jeep model that hit the dirt in 2003 was the Wrangler Rubicon 4X4. This Jeep sported over ten inches of ground clearance and provides a 44 degree angle of approach and a 40 degree angle of departure. Simply speaking you'll be able to get over larger obstacles. Sporting a V6, the Rubicon is priced to sell way below most sport utility vehicles. The Rubicon was specifically built with the off-roader in mind. Options included in this package are the front and rear Dana 44 axles, a transfer case with a low-range and 31 inch tires.
Unlike most sport utility vehicles, SUV's, the Jeep is easy to adapt or lift for off road high-jinx. Adding a roll-bar for safety and larger tires for clearance and traction the Jeeps narrow body, short wheelbase and smaller frame make it ideal for anybody who wants to get in the mud. Another feature that comes standard with Jeeps is the removable doors and top which is a key selling point for off road enthusiast.
How do you choose the best Jeep for your off-road needs? Simply make sure the vehicle has the name Jeep attached to it. Without any modifications your Jeep is ready to hit the roughest, messiest, longest terrain you can throw at it. Whether you're looking to hit the dunes in your home town or the Baja 500 your Jeep will get you where you need to be. The only question left is whether you're a good enough driver to make it over that hill.

Buggy Construction Tips Using Sandrail Parts
Executive Summary about " Sandrail Parts " by " Nick"
So you want to tear up the dunes with your own dune buggy but you're not sure whether to buy a complete turnkey buggy or use some dune buggy plans with sandrail parts to build your own?
The main factor that people consider when deciding to buy/build a dune buggy is the cost of the project, how much is it going to cost me if I decide to buy one vs. build one myself?
That said the most important factor in dune buggy construction is which plans and sandrail parts to use for construction. Let’s face it you are about to invest quite a bit of money and time into building a dune buggy so make sure you choose quality plans from the start.
Most good quality, proven plans will set you back around $100-$200 and will give you good solid information and a step by step procedure to building your buggy. You can get plans for cheaper but usually these are quite basic and you won't get the detail you need to build the buggy properly.
For me personally, building my own dune buggy is one of the most fun and most rewarding projects I have done.
Build Your Own Dune Buggy - It's Not Hard (Or is It)?
Executive Summary about " Sandrail Parts " by "Peter Clark"
You've seen some great dune buggies on the beach lately, and you've decided that owning and driving a dune buggy looks great. Basically there are 3 places that dune buggies are driven, and each requires a different build.
Yes you can drive a dune buggy on the road. Then there's the classic place for dune buggies, the dunes. Sand driving is probably about the most fun that you can have in a buggy, but it needs a buggy with specific characteristics. Then there's the off road buggy designed for the dirt. So if you're intending to build your own dune buggy, then you need to work out your exact requirements first. Frame, motor, tires, suspension, brakes, roll cage, body, if you want one of sandrail parts.
So is it hard to build your own buggy? However if you haven't done much work with cars before then yes, building a dune buggy isn't easy. My first recommendation if you thinking of building your own dune buggy for the first time? Buy a dune buggy kit or at the very least some high quality dune buggy plans to work from. So grab yourself a second hand buggy, learn all you can about it first, learn all you can about building a dune buggy for yourself and, if you really want to, build your second buggy once you know what you're in for.

Sandrails Feature sample
A simple sandrails buggy. Features 2-speed remotely controlled gearbox, live rear axle and lights.
Datasheet :
Completion date : 23/11/2008
Power : electric (Power Functions)
Dimensions : length 47 studs / width 25 studs / height 25 studs
Weight : 1.08 kg
Suspension : front: independent with shock absorbers / rear: live axle on shock absorbers
Motors : 2 x PF Medium
A simple sandrails (subcategory of buggies), built basically to test my live axle concept. A live axle is an axle that has no fixed attachment to the frame of the vehicle. Instead, it is connected by a system of links and supported by shock absorbers. Live axle suspensions are usually complex, but offer very good stability and excellent performance, comparable to those of a typical independent suspension. And just like the independent suspension, live axle does not let the vehicle’s weight affect the drive train, which means that it performs better in heavy vehicles that the pendular suspension does, because the weight doesn’t generate extra friction on the drive train components (except wheels, of course).
In Lego, a very complex live axle systems exist, with probably the most extreme exampleavailable here. There for my goal was rather to create something as simple as possible sandrails. I ended up with an axle suspended on 4 links and a driveshaft only - a solution that turned out to blend simplicity with reliability pretty well. It had two minor drawbacks: it was slightly affected by the driveshaft’s torque, just like the pendular suspensions are, and the driveshaft could be theoretically affected by the vehicle’s ( sandrails ) weight to some extent while maing a turn or climbing certain obstacles. Despite that, this suspension system worked far better that I could expect.
Another note able feature was the use of the direction sensitive gearbox I have developed earlier. It was braced by lift arms here, and allowed the vehicle to be driven only forwards. It did work as expected, but the liftarmic frame turned out to be somewhat loose, and did not deliver the kind of performance that traditional bricks could.
The model was built with minimal attention to the aesthetic side, I just wanted it to look realistic, not pretty. Therefore I’ve used rather unusual palette of colors, and did not intend to film the vehicle ( sandrails ).
The LUGPol community, however, showed much interest in the suspension concept, and persuaded me into filming it, so I’ve eventually published a video titled Live Axle, to emphasize the fact that it was the suspension concept that was important, not the actual car ( sandrails ).

Off Road Truck Driving Techniques and Safety
Responsible 4-wheeling is about finesse.
Driving diagonally = Rollover.
Always drive straight down hills or steep terrain. Know your approach and departure angles, the bumper to tire distance. Some off road trails will require off-camber driving. Trucks will tend to slide sideways before rolling over the tires will slip sideways a little.
Reducing tire pressure will increase traction on gravel and sand. For most 4-wheeling purposes, a tire pressure of 18 to 20psi will be adequate. Highway pressure is another consideration altogether. The tire is marked on the side, i.e., 50psi at 3300 pounds. Depending on the weight of the loaded vehicle and the size of tire, a tire pressure of between 28 and 35psi works in most on-highway applications.
Dropping the tire into a ditch or crack in a rock can put you and your truck in a vulnerable position. Sometimes the vehicle pitches and one or more tires will catch air. Turn the vehicle at an angle to facilitate the one tire at a time approach. Be careful not to allow one of the front tires and one of the rear tires to get in the ditch at the same time.
One of the most crucial aspects to off road understands the absolute importance of tire pressure. Among the most pertinent tire pressure considerations in regards to summer off road is utilizing optimum sand tire pressure. Optimum sand tire pressure is a combination of many things, of which truck-owners myths are least productive. However, your tires, their construction methods and materials, what your car weighs, how it is loaded, and wheel width, all play into the sand-pressure tire formula with predictable results.
For those who say skinny, hard tires are better for snow, mud or whatever, please tell me why they don’t use ten-speed bicycle-type tires on snowmobiles? Sand rail people and mud buggers know big feet work better as well.
The choice of tread pattern, otherwise known as your tires footprint, is extremely important to consider during your new tire decision making process, and especially so if you are fitting your truck for an off-road adventure. The most popular tread pattern for all around off-road use is a mud terrain pattern.
The mud terrain or mud tire pattern is characterized by large lugs on the tire with big voids between these lugs. The large lugs provide plenty of bite in low traction conditions while the big voids allow the tire to clean itself by throwing off mud or other material when spinning, thus providing a good bite on every rotation of the tire. These tires are also very popular for rock crawling as the large lugs can provide a way of gripping and pulling the tires up and over irregular rocky edges where a smoother pattern would just spin.
The general purpose all terrain tire generally has an interlocked tread pattern with sipping (small cuts) on the tread blocks. The voids in these tires are usually much smaller than those on tires designed for use in the mud. The denser pattern of blocks and smaller voids make these tires quieter on the street. It also increases the surface area of the tread which gives the tire improved flotation on surfaces such as light powdery snow or sand.
A variety of manufacturers also offer a family of tires sometimes called trail tires or some similar name.

Sandrail Dune Buggies
Have you even been somewhere where you can find sand dunes, and dune buggies?
Somewhere where the buggies are allowed to drive on the dunes?
Well it is. Owning a dune buggy is one of a sandrail buggy is a specific type of dune buggies.
There are, in fact, a number of different types of buggy, and a number of different places where you can drive a buggy.
For example there are street legal buggies, you may well have seen them, and even some off-road buggies are built to be street legal just so that the owners can drive them to where they want to go, rather than trailer them.
What is a sandrail ? It can be called sometimes a sand car or sand rail. These are dune buggies that are specifically designed for driving on sandy terrain, particularly steep sandy terrain. There are quite a number of places where it is legal to drive on the dunes, and this is where you find the sandrails.
They are extremely lightweight, with a very high power to weight ratio and they use large high flotation tires with very large treads. Both of these factors allow them to skim lightly over the surface of the sand rather than bogging down into it as a heavier vehicle, or a vehicle with narrow tires would do. But a sandrail usually has narrow front tires to allow it to bit into the sand when turning.
A sandrail has a very low center of gravity, which allows it to drive both up and across steep slopes without rolling.
Motors are usually lightweight with a good power to weight ratio, and often air cooled, sometimes original VW beetle engines, although modern sandrail dune buggies are now using more modern lightweight water cooled motors, for instance Subaru motors. A good sandrail dune buggy isn't cheap, but is well worth the cost. A sand rail is excitement epitomized.
So if you're into motorsport, and want to get into a (relatively) cheap form of motorsport, consider a sandrail dune buggy.
